BNC coordinates the use of the Budapest Research Reactor and provides scientific infrastructure for the international user community, by maintaining an open access user programme, currently offering 16 experimental stations.

BNC continuously participating in topic oriented transnational research access programmes. In heritage science IPERION HS is just finished, while is just started E-RISH. CERIC-ERIC in materials science is continuously in our scope, just like we participating ReMade@ARI – LENS programme. BNC is just contracting in NEPHEWS programme, which is one of the largest transnational access projects under Horizon Europe.
The Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC) has recently implemented a new organizational structure with the aim of enhancing collaboration and efficiency. The Nuclear Analysis and Radiography Department and the Neutron Spectroscopy Department of the HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research, Institute of Energy Security and Environmental Sciences have merged into a division from the 1st of January 2025 under the name of Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC). The newly formed BNC is a complex, structured department of the Institute for Energy Security and Environmental Sciences. It comprises five specialized groups:
- Technical Development and Support Group
and a User Office, thereby fostering stronger integration and support for the neutron research community.
