The BNC fully endorses the recently published 2025 Position Paper of the ENSA, which outlines a strategic vision for a resilient and thriving European neutron science ecosystem.
Neutron scattering plays a crucial role in solving key scientific and technological challenges, from materials research to energy, health and cultural heritage. However, recent facility closures across Europe have drastically reduced both neutron access and expertise, threatening Europe’s global leadership in the field.
ENSA’s position highlights the need for:
- A balanced ecosystem of international and national neutron sources, including new-generation facilities like the ESS, and sustainable operation of existing ones such as ILL and smaller national centres like BNC.
- Increased support for training and education, especially for early-career researchers, to safeguard future expertise.
- A European-wide roadmap to integrate Hi-CANS (High-Current Accelerator-driven Neutron Sources) into the research landscape.
- Closer cooperation among facilities through shared technologies, coordinated operations, and common access models.
As a key contributor to European neutron science, BNC remains committed to providing experimental access, supporting user training, and participating in strategic collaborations that reinforce the long-term vitality of neutron research in Europe.
