Veronika Szilágyi, a researcher of the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC, HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research, Institute for Energy Security and Environmental Safety), has been honoured with the prestigious Bolyai János Research Fellowship.

The research grant, as announced by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), is intended to provide support for high-quality research in all fields and disciplines of science conducted at a Hungarian scientific institution, and to assist researchers in their preparation for obtaining the title of Doctor of the MTA.

Our colleague will conduct research that aligns with the scope of the Heritage Science (HS) Group of BNC. The focus of this research will be on a specific Medieval archaeological ceramic group, the “Buda whiteware”. The research approach will involve complex material analysis, encompassing textural study by petrographic microscopy, mineralogical composition determination by X-ray powder diffraction, and chemical composition analysis by prompt and neutron activation analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and electron microscopy. The aim of this study is to separate compositional groups and determine their provenance (i.e. the origin of their raw material) in order to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the varieties of white ceramics and their possible manufacturing workshops.
