We are very pleased to share with the neutron community that, the Budapest Research Reactor has resumed operation and successfully completed four consecutive 96-hour cycles this autumn. These cycles not only enabled important isotope production and industrial irradiation to be undertaken but also facilitated many transnational access research and training projects.

Research and training activities
The BNC was pleased to welcome guest researchers from Italy, Spain, Greece and Malaysia participating in our many TNA research and training programs including CERIC-ERIC, ReMade, NEPHEWS, IAEA, and through the BNC’s own access system. The research spanned a wide range of scientific fields, from reactor and instrument development, electronic waste recycling, to heritage science, using the YS-SANS, PGAA, NIPS/NORMA, RAD, NAA instruments. The BNC also hosted two training secondments with Dr Hishamuddin Husain (Malaysian Nuclear Agency, IAEA – Training act) and Dr Barbara Borgers (University of Padua, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowship) receiving training in the use of PGAA and SANS respectively.

New heritage science project launched
Continuing our long-running experience with the analysis of cultural artefacts, the BNC Heritage Science Group launched a new project in collaboration with archaeologists from the Institute for Archaeology, ELTE-Research Centre for Humanities. The results from this exciting collaboration will be posted on the BNC website in the near future.
Nuclear analytical experiments on “Buda whiteware” Medieval archaeological ceramic group also started in these reactor cycles under the frame of Bolyai János Research Fellowship awarded to Veronika Szilágyi.
In addition, compositions of raw materials of polished stone objects originating from the Carpathian basin have been determined with PGAA and NAA, within the frame of an OTKA (NKFI) project. We are currently in the first year of a four-year-long project.

New User Office
To support our ongoing and future users, we’re pleased to announce the launch of our reorganised user office, which we help will make organising your projects and visiting the BNC even easier! If you would like to organise an experiment at the BNC or arrange a visit, then the User Office looks forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks to all our users:
